SOCIAL MEDIA

During my time at the Columbia Missourian, I worked as both a Copy Editor on the Interactive Copy Desk, and as a member of the Outreach Team. Both of these jobs required that I write and post on the Missourian's social media pages, including Facebook, Twitter and Snapchat. Additionally on the Outreach Desk, I was tasked with tracking stories and posts to see how they performed with audiences, using apps like Parse.ly and Banjo to measure things like the number of page views, how long people spent on the page, how they found pages and posts, etc. Below are a few of my favorite social posts I wrote, posted and tracked for the Columbia Missourian.

OPEN THE ROOM:

This tweet is a part of a series that I worked on while at the Outreach Desk. The goal of my project was to improve public attention to our coverage of city government by pitching story ideas, live streaming public government events and interacting directly with readers. This tweet brought readers to a survey they could fill out regarding our coverage of Columbia's City Council and Board of Commissioners.

WEATHER TWEETS:

We were encouraged to get creative, and to use our own personal voice when writing weather tweets for the Missourian. Here are just a few of my personal favorites.

PHOTOGRAPHY

While much of my experience as a photographer is that of an amateur, I have been using a Canon EOS Rebel t2i since I was 16 years old. I know how to take, compose and edit an image successfully. I have been trained on how to successfully take photos by the Missouri School of Journalism, as well as personal experience doing so. Please find some of my best work below. To look through the galleries, click on each photo.

Seeing Red (taken with a Canon EOS Rebel t2i in Columbia, MO)

This was an assignment for a Multimedia Journalism Course I took at MU. Our objective was to find objects in our world that were red, with contrasting colors surrounding them. The exercise allowed us to experiment with color and find interesting ways to frame photos without interfering with the surroundings.

Kill the Bill? (taken with a Canon EOS Rebel t2i in Columbia, MO)

I took these photos for The Maneater, the University of Missouri's student newspaper. The rally was held to oppose Missouri House Bill 253, aimed at lowering the maximum income tax for individuals and corporations in Missouri. The bill would essentially cause a 8 to 16 percent increase in tuition at MU. Representatives from both sides of the aisle and the system president showed up in support and in protest of the bill.

Ireland Vacation (taken with a Canon EOS Rebel t2i in Ireland)

These photos were taken while I was on vacation with my family in Ireland. The photos were taken all throughout the western coast of the country. I used the vacation as an opportunity to practice my photography.

AUDIO

I have limited experience in producing and editing audio, but the experience I do have has taught me a lot. In a Multimedia Journalism class I took while attending the Missouri School of Journalism, I was taught the basics of how to capture good audio, and how to best edit and present that audio to an audience.

MU's all-female a capella group sings their way to success

For this story, I recorded, edited and embedded audio clips of an a capella group singing into my story using SoundCite. Music played along with the lyrics when readers clicked them, creating an interactive audio experience.

Mizzou Forte Audio Story — Multimedia Journalism

In my Multimedia Journalism class, we were tasked with creating a piece of audio content covering a subject of our choosing. I decided to cover another one of Mizzou's a capella groups, Mizzou Forte, and created this audio story through Audacity. I recorded and edited all of the audio heard here, along with conducting all of the interviews in the story.

VIDEO

I have been producing and editing video since I was in high school, when I shot and edited videos of myself and my friends to send around to one another. Since then, I have improved my work in shooting and editing video. While I don't have a significant amount of professional experience in video production, I know how to work a camera, how to take audio, how to successfully edit a package, and how to sell it as a piece of journalism. Please see the following two videos as evidence of my skills in video production.

Missourian Minute — Woodworking

I shot, edited and produced this video with my partner Tiffany Crouse for a project at the Columbia Missourian entitled "Missourian Minute." Every reporter was asked to pair up and find a story out in Columbia that would make an interesting video segment. I had been working on a story about a local woodworker, so my partner and I decided to create a video surrounding his work and how he got started in woodworking. It was well-received by the video staff, although it was ultimately not published.

Mizzou Forte (TV-Style Video) — Multimedia Journalism

In my Multimedia Journalism class, I worked on both an audio and video project, following around the co-ed acapella group at the University of Missouri, Mizzou Forte. I attended multiple rehearsals and talked to a number of members in order to produce the video. I received an A on the project.
