The Maneater
While I worked as the opinion editor at The Maneater, I had a number of responsibilities to fulfill. First and foremost, I was in charge of writing weekly editorials that spoke to issues that mattered to students on campus. I edited weekly columns and worked regularly with a small group of columnists to improve their writing. I also moderated the comments section of the site and published letters to the editor as necessary.

EDITORIALS:
All of us are responsible for campus culture — Dec. 3, 2014
- This piece won first place in editorial writing from the Missouri College Media Association. The editorial was written in the wake of a number of anonymous online threats to Mizzou's campus in response to on-campus protests regarding race relations. The editorial called for students, including ourselves on the Maneater Editorial Board, to seek education and understanding openly instead of ignoring racial problems.
Sexual orientation non-discrimination bill essential for Missouri — Apr. 28, 2015
- An editorial calling for the state of Missouri to pass a non-discrimination bill that would widen the legal definition of discrimination in Missouri to include unfair treatment based on sexual orientation, and questioning why this hasn’t been part of the state’s definition of discrimination for any of its existence.
Title IX violation is unacceptable — Aug. 26, 2014
- An editorial admonishing the University of Missouri for their handling of the Derrick Washington rape scandals, calling for better policies to be put in place to prevent sexual violence instead of simply reacting to it.
COLUMNS:
Ode to the small penis — Sept. 2, 2014
- A column I edited with The Maneater's anonymous sex columnist during fall 2014, known as Edna Smith, or "Sex Edna." Edna provided beautiful turns of phrase, but often had difficulty with AP Style, which I helped her with throughout the semester. This column is a perfect example of our editing to enhance her voice, while making sure that all of the style aspects of the story were polished.
MU's diversity obsession is needed — March 11, 2015
- A column I edited with The Maneater's campus climate columnist, Jalen Mosby. Jalen was exceptionally good at finding ideas for weekly columns, but occasionally had problems with structuring his stories. Throughout the semester, I worked with Jalen to improve the structuring of his columns; this column is a good example of some of the progress Jalen made while I was his editor.
The worst nightmare for a Chinese family — Feb. 18, 2015
- A column I edited with The Maneater's international columnist, Loretta Lee. Loretta only spoke English as a second language, so we worked together very closely to make sure that her grammar and sentence structure made sense. We also worked on finding new angles for her to talk about her experiences. What often became the most useful was when Loretta discussed her time as an exchange student, as she did in this column.
